What solid hardwood is

BRC Flooring / 01

What solid hardwood is

Solid hardwood is a plank cut from one piece of timber, usually three-quarters of an inch thick. Oak, maple, and hickory are common. It is the traditional floor in many older Detroit homes.

BRC Flooring can install solid hardwood. But we will tell you straight: most of our customers end up happier with engineered hardwood.

Where solid works

Where solid works

Solid wood does best above grade, over a wood subfloor, in rooms with steady humidity. Think a main-floor living room in a 1940s colonial or bungalow with sound subflooring.

  • Nailed down over a plywood or board subfloor
  • Rooms that stay at a stable indoor humidity
  • Homes where you want a classic, thicker plank

Where we steer you elsewhere

Michigan swings from damp summers to dry, heated winters. Solid planks swell and shrink with that, which can cause gaps and cupping. Basements and concrete slabs are not suitable at all, because moisture comes up from below.

Engineered planks have a plywood core that resists movement. They also install over slabs and in more rooms. If your project is a basement, look at luxury vinyl plank as well. For the full overview, see our main hardwood page.

We prep the subfloor, acclimate the wood, lay out the first row against a straight line, and nail or staple down each plank with proper expansion room at the walls. Most rooms take one to two days.
